Important Note
Before using traffic count information shown on MDOT traffic maps, we would like to inform you of some facts affecting the precision of the data. The counts
are made to obtain statewide vehicle-miles-traveled using statistics. As a result, individiual counts may not represent an exact depiction of the traffic at
a given site. Here are some facts about our data:
- Traffic is counted for 48 hours at each site.
- One third (1/3) of the traffic sites in a county or city are counted each year.
- Traffic counts for previous 2 years are updated to the current year using a factor based on traffic growth of counted sites elsewhere in the county.
- The traffic count shown on the maps are AADT (Annual Average Daily Traffic).
- AADT is computed using factors. The 48 hour counts are adjusted to AADT using factors for day-of-week, season, average percent trucks, etc.
- Factors are derived from approximately 65 Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATR) located across the state on all types of roads.
- ATRs count full time using special detectors, which classify vehicles into trucks, autos, etc. The ATRs also collect data by hour for the entire year.
We provide these traffic maps as a service and invite you to use them. However, we also caution you to understand that data may not be exact because of the methods
used. For additional information, you may call the Planning Division at 601-359-7685 and ask for the Supervisor of the Traffic Analysis Section.
